How to use an eSIM abroad

Online before baggage claim.

  1. 1

    Buy it at home

Pick your destination and your data. Pay in dollars. Your eSIM hits your inbox in minutes.

  2. 2

    Install it before you fly

Tap Install on your phone, on your home Wi-Fi. Takes 2 minutes. Do it before the TSA line, not at the gate.

  3. 3

    Land and go

Flip off airplane mode. You’re online before the seatbelt sign goes off.

Why Americans switch

All the perks of home. None of the roaming bill.

  • Keep your number

Texts, calls and bank codes still hit your US number. iMessage and FaceTime just work.

  • Pay in dollars

One upfront price. No daily charges. No bill shock when you get home.

  • Built for iPhone

US iPhone 14 and newer have no SIM tray. eSIM is how they’re built.

  • 200+ destinations

Cancún for spring break or a month across Europe. We’ve got you covered.

Before you buy

Will it work on my phone?

Most recent iPhones, Galaxys and Pixels do. Take 30 seconds now and skip the scramble at the gate.

Check your phone
  1. 1

iPhone 14 or newer? You’re set.

Apple sells the iPhone 14 and every model since in the US with no SIM tray. They’re eSIM-only, so they’re ready for ours. Most recent Galaxy and Pixel phones work too.

  2. 2

    Make sure it’s unlocked

A locked phone only takes its own carrier’s lines. On iPhone, Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock should say "No SIM restrictions." AT&T unlocks paid-off phones after 60 days; Verizon once the phone is paid in full. Prepaid phones usually take 12 months.

  3. 3

    Quick check: dial *#06#

See an EID number? Your phone supports eSIM. Check at home, not at the gate.

Questions? We’ve got answers.

What is an international eSIM?

A digital SIM you download instead of a plastic card you swap in. You buy a data plan for the country you’re visiting, tap Install on your phone, and it gets a local data connection there, priced in dollars and paid up front. Your US SIM stays put.

Do I need an international plan to travel abroad?

Not if you get an eSIM. Your carrier’s international day pass or monthly plan is one way to stay connected; a data eSIM is the other, usually for less. Many US plans already cover Mexico and Canada, so check yours before you buy.

Do I keep my US phone number?

Yes. The eSIM only handles data, and your US line stays on, so texts and the 2FA codes from your bank still come through. iMessage, FaceTime and WhatsApp work over the eSIM’s data. Heads up: on AT&T and Verizon, making or answering a call or sending a text on your US line abroad can start their daily fee, so call and message over apps instead.

How do I avoid roaming charges from AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile?

Before you land, make the eSIM your cellular data line and turn off data roaming on your US line. On iPhone: Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data, pick the eSIM, and turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching. Then turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM only. AT&T’s day pass also starts when you make or answer a call or send a text on your US line abroad (texts you receive are free), so use FaceTime, iMessage or WhatsApp over the eSIM.

Is an eSIM cheaper than my carrier’s international plan?

For data, usually. AT&T’s International Day Pass and Verizon’s TravelPass are $12 a day, and Verizon’s monthly international plan is $100. Our plans are one price for the whole trip. Their passes do include calls and texts; ours are data-only.

When should I install it?

At home, on Wi-Fi, before you fly. Data plans don’t start until the eSIM connects abroad, so installing early costs you nothing. Unlimited plans start on the date you pick at checkout.

Will it work on a cruise?

In port, yes. At sea, your phone can connect to the ship’s own network, which AT&T and Verizon bill at $20 a day. Keep roaming off on your US line on board and use the eSIM when you’re in port.

Can I pay in US dollars? With Apple Pay?

Yes and yes. Every price on esimpass.us is in dollars, and you pay in dollars with Apple Pay, Visa, Mastercard, American Express or PayPal.

Can I make phone calls with it?

Not regular calls. You get data, not a phone number. FaceTime and WhatsApp work over the eSIM’s data.

What if my eSIM doesn’t work?

Contact us and our team will help you get connected. If your eSIM doesn’t arrive, or can’t be installed because of a problem on our end, you get a full refund, and the same goes for a plan bought twice by mistake. Ask within 7 days of purchase. Once an eSIM is installed it can’t be refunded, so check that your phone is unlocked first.

Why does checkout open on esimpass.com?
